Diamond is the rarest material in minecraft. But, with knowledge of it's spawn rates, you can have a stack of diamond in an hour.
1.From looking through x-rays of minecraft maps, I see that diamond often spawns near redstone and coal near lava. I am not sure if this is a coincidence or an intended feature.
2. Cave mining is actually one of the WORST ways to find diamond. When cave systems generate, they cut through all of the ores that were where they are. This is why exposed ore veins are often smaller. To find diamonds, Find a cave that goes down to layer 12. Then, expand the walls outward 5 blocks on all sides. This will expose diamond veins that were not cut off by cave generation.
3.From looking through x-rays, I have found that although often diamond spawns every chunk, the layer it spawns in is quite random. If you have access to a large amount of iron picks, completely hollow out layers 17 through 4 in a 32x32 area. Following basic logic, at least 2 veins of diamond will be found.
4. Multi-layer branch mining is a mix of branch mining and the method mentioned in tip #3 Dig a branch mine and on top of that mine's ceiling, dig another mine. This will expose all diamonds in that chunk without the expense of hollowing the chunk out.
5. The most effective branch mine design is a 3x3x3 tunnel with 3x1 tunnels going in every direction in intervals of 2 blocks.
